Shyness is a beautiful thing

I have been shy my whole life and even though it’s definitely matured and transformed in different ways over the years, its essence and roots have always been there deep within.

For some reason, shyness seems to have a negative connotation attached to it. It’s perceived almost as a hinderance; something you should try to work through and overcome. Obviously, there are varying degrees of this exquisitely gentle quality, but for myself, shyness is something that makes me incredibly proud.

Now, I didn’t always feel this way. It’s something I grew in to over time, but I’m so glad that I did. I honestly feel honoured to still experience it, to some extent, on a daily basis. It helps to keep me grounded and present and it’s often what I notice first and admire in others.

For myself, it’s always felt as though the real genuine depths of my soul are consistently right there at the surface. So when you begin to experience and share yourself with the world, there is a very delicate and detailed process on exactly how to do that in a safe and protective way. It’s vulnerability at its finest. It is sacred. And it needs to be cared for.

Shyness is not a fan of small talk or anything fake. It doesn’t like pressure or your required expectations. It will always remember that snow day in public school when you only had to say your speech in front of 5 people and it can vividly recall when you wrote the words ‘I love you’ on a piece of paper to your University boyfriend because they just weren’t going to come out the other way. It can connect with a smile or a comforting touch and it can fly off into the distance on the wings of just a few simple words.

Whether you would classify yourself as shy or not, I would like to think there is some of it in all of us. So next time it peeks its head out or flutters in your tummy, don’t push it aside. It’s beautiful and delicate and deserves to be seen.

Sincerely,

The Real Genuine Depths
